Dragonfly Forest Summer Camp

A Specialty Program of Camp Speers YMCA

Dragonfly Forest is a traditional overnight camp for kids with special and medical needs: Autism, 22q Deletion Syndrome, Down Syndrome, Asthma, Sickle Cell Disease, and Hemophilia.

Campers thrive at Dragonfly with the support from a low counselor-to-camper ratio and medical team experts in neurodiversity and medical fields. This special program is built around a culture of inclusion, with outcomes that yield confidence and independence that can extend beyond a week of camp.

Activities are tailored to meet the unique abilities of each camper. Campers participate in a variety of activities such as archery, ropes courses, nature hikes, swimming, canoeing, tie-dying, rock climbing, camp fires, arts and crafts!

Campers stay in duplex cabins (2 sides) with bathrooms and a common room. Cabins have 10 campers and at least 2 counselors.

Neurodiversity Program: Offered weeks 4 (July 12-17), and 5 (July 19-24), this program serves campers ages 7-14 with 22q Deletion Syndrome, Autism, and Down Syndrome. Campers participate in all the fun camp activities with the supports and care they need to be successful and have fun. Campers get to spend time with other campers with the same diagnosis but also spend time with campers with different diagnoses. We do this to both help campers find peers who are similar, and to learn about the beauty that is neurodiversity. During these sessions we follow a 1:3 counselor to camper ratio. Our counselors are equipped with strategies for communication and de-escalation including the use of white boards, timers, picture schedules, and noise-cancelling headphones.

$700 per session

Explorers Program: Offered weeks 2 (June 28 – July 3), and 3 (July 5-10), this program serves teens and young adults ages 13-24 who are interested in independent life skills. Campers spend part of their day at life skills workshops and the remaining part of the day participating in the fun camp activities. Life skill workshops include cooking, cleaning, laundry, self-advocacy, social media and phone use, teamwork and money management. Throughout the week, campers can earn “hollars” to then spend on movies, snacks, games and activities during our Dfly village evening programs. During this program we follow a 1:4 counselor to camper ratio. Our counselors are equipped with strategies for communication and de-escalation including the use of white boards, timers, picture schedules, and noise-cancelling headphones.

$730 per session

Asthma Program: Offered week 6 (July 26-31), this program serves campers ages 7-14 with persistent Asthma. Campers are provided with a fun experience at camp with the support of our medical team, available 24/7. Our medical team takes time throughout the week to educate campers on their diagnosis and how to advocate for themselves. The medical team consists of medical professionals from a variety of hospitals, including CHOP, who regularly provide care for children with Asthma.

$700 per session

Hematology Program: Offered week 7 (August 2-7), this program serves campers ages 7-14 with Hemophilia and Sickle Cell Disease. Campers are provided with fun experience at camp with the support of our medical team, available 24/7. Our medical team takes time throughout the week to educate campers on their diagnosis and how to advocate for themselves. The medical team consists of medical professionals from a variety of hospitals, including CHOP, who regularly provide care for children with Hemophilia and Sickle Cell Disease.

$700 per session

Teen Leadership Program: A two- week session offered weeks 6 and 7 (July 26 – August 7) for campers ages 15 – 16 interested in becoming a counselor at Dragonfly Forest or Camp Speers. Teens are engaged in the teen leadership curriculum in addition to participating (and running) some of the fun camp activities. The teen leadership curriculum includes counselor skills rotations, teamwork and leadership opportunities, behavior management and shadowing counselors. Campers walk away with the skills necessary to be a counselor, greater independence and confidence, and lots of new experiences. We recommend completion of the TLP program to be prepared for applying as a Junior Counselor.
