Experience the Outdoors with Dragonfly Forest : An Inclusive Camping Experience

At Camp Speers YMCA, we believe everyone deserves the chance to enjoy the magic of camp. Our unique Camp Abilities program, Dragonfly Forest, is designed for campers aged 7-28 with cognitive and developmental disabilities, offering an inclusive and supportive environment where campers can thrive.

Campers engage in exciting activities, build independence, and create memories that last a lifetime, all under the guidance of our trained and passionate staff who are dedicated to ensuring every camper has a safe, fun, and enriching experience. Dragonfly Forest is all about having fun, trying new things, and pushing limits in a safe and supportive environment.

Each day at camp is packed with thrilling activities like swimming, archery, rock climbing, horseback riding, and much more. This provides campers with opportunities to try activities they may not have access to elsewhere, and gain confidence in their abilities. No matter their interests or abilities, campers will find activities that excite and inspire them.

My time being the Director of Dragonfly Forest has been the most impactful and memorable moments in my camping career. There is a true mission and evident growth every single day. I’ve never felt so much joy and acceptance myself, and it is an honor to hold a space like this for so many campers and staff.

Something I love most about Camp Speers YMCA is how we celebrate inclusion and acceptance. We believe every camper, regardless of their abilities, deserves to feel valued and included. Our campers come from all over the country to share cabins and adventures, creating an atmosphere of fun and friendship. Here, campers build meaningful connections with each other, strengthening their social skills and learning the importance of teamwork and collaboration. Every camper leaves with a friend for life.

Trained and Passionate Staff 

We take pride in our trained and passionate staff who play a pivotal role in ensuring every camper has a safe and enriching experience. Our team consists of experienced counselors, educators, and caregivers who are specially trained to support campers with cognitive and developmental disabilities.

They bring a wealth of knowledge, patience, and compassion to their work, creating a safe and supportive environment where campers can thrive. The dedication of our staff ensures every camper feels empowered and encouraged to reach their full potential during their time at camp and beyond.

“I first came to Dragonfly Forest because there were very few camps that were accommodating to children with special needs, like myself, and almost no camps where the staff knew how to appropriately respond when a camper with special needs needed extra support. When the time to start thinking about becoming a staff member came, I knew I wanted to become a counselor, I was so excited because I wanted to give the campers the same fun and memorable experiences that I got to have as a camper.”- Scotty, Dragonfly Camper turned Staff Member 

Outdoor Experiences Like No Other 

We believe in the power of the outdoors. Our campers get to experience nature in a way they may not find elsewhere. From visiting the animals on camp to swimming in our lake, every day offers a new opportunity for campers to connect with nature, discover new hobbies, and enjoy the simple pleasures of being outside.

We’ve seen deescalation happen, just by the sound of the birds and the sight of the clouds. There is a sense of peace when you are surrounded by the nature we have at camp. These experiences foster a sense of adventure, curiosity, and excitement that is at the heart of the camp.

Dragonfly Forest offers more than just fun—it’s an opportunity for campers to build independence. By participating in a variety of activities and making decisions about their camp experience, campers develop important life skills that will benefit them beyond their time at camp. Whether it’s cooking over the campfire or taking part in low ropes activities, each camper learns how to navigate challenges and gain confidence in their abilities.

Explorers Spring Retreat 

This March 2025, we hosted an unforgettable weekend retreat for our Explorer Campers aged 18-28. The weekend was packed with fun activities like s’mores around the campfire, glow dance party, campfire cooking, singing songs, and spending time on the farm. Our campers also enjoyed challenging themselves with rock climbing, many making it to the top and ringing the bell with big smiles. We were able to create an environment full of laughter, personal growth, and meaningful connections. It was a chance for everyone to reconnect with old friends and make new ones, all while embracing the great outdoors and sharing magical experiences.

This retreat served as an important resource for this age group, offering a unique opportunity for young adults to enjoy an inclusive, social, and adventurous weekend. Many campers have aged out of traditional programs, so this program is a unique and vital chance for them to stay engaged in outdoor activities and build lasting friendships. We’re grateful for the memories made and excited to continue offering such valuable experiences for our Explorer campers in the future.
