Each year children and teens from all over the Northeast benefit from summer resident and day camp experiences at Camp Speers-Eljabar YMCA. They build lasting friendships with campers from diverse backgrounds, they master new skills, they gain independence and self esteem, they take responsibility for making their world a better place and they learn to live by our Core Values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Everyone who has ever shared a summer camp experience would testify that their experience helped them to become a better, stronger person.
Yet as important as the summer camp experience is in the lives of children and teens, not all families are able to send their children to camp. Based on our conviction that the camp experience should be available to all regardless of social-economic background, we strive to secure funding so all who wish to share the Camp Speers-Elajbar YMCA summer camp experience may do so. In 2008 alone, over $ 150,000 in camperships were awarded to families to enable them to provide the summer camp experience for their children.
